Providing tools and methods to assess and plan environmental policies has been one of the main goal of systematic conservation planning for the last decade. Many studies have evaluated the efficiency of protected areas network in covering biodiversity both at local and continental scale and proposed new priorities for conservation.
Recently, scientists highlighted the need to consider different kind of land use in order to provide indicators, assessments and recommendations closer to reality, thus more applicable by conservation planners.
Our study aims to conduct a gap analysis at the global scale using IUCN categories of protected areas. National parks but also hunting game areas, community reserves, etc. can play different roles in nature conservation. We will analyse the responsibility of different types of protected areas regarding different biodiversity issues (species taxonomic groups, ecosystem services, etc.).
We are looking for a student with a background in biological conservation and strong skills in spatial analysis and GIS.
