The Mountain Ecosystems research group at Irstea Grenoble ( invites applications for an internship on assessing habitat quality for black grouse based on remote sensing under the supervision of Björn Reineking and Thomas Spiegelberger.
In the context of an ecological compensation banking approach, the land owner aims at improving the ecological quality for black grouse at the study site, a subalpine watershed composed of open grasslands and forest mixed with green alder shrublands.
The analysis will be based on high resolution Lidar data (> 30 pulses/m²) and aerial photographs (4 cm resolution) and compared to the results of an existing rapid assessment field protocol developed by the French National Hunting and Wildlife Agency (ONCFS). The objective of the internship is to develop a new analysis protocol based on remote sensing data for an operational quantitative indicator of black grouse habitat quality.
This project if financed by the French National Hunting and Wildlife Agency (ONCFS) and the association IBCM that is closely linked to the French Electricity Company (EDF), the owner of the study site.
The successful candidate should be fluent in the R programming language. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing would be advantageous. Knowledge of French is not required, but students are expected to be fluent in English. Field work in mountainous terrain (about 10 days) is part of the internship.
Working place is at Irstea Grenoble, 2 rue de la papeterie, Saint Martin d’Hères. A monthly allowance of 554,40€ is paid. The internship lasts for a maximum of 6 months, the earliest start is in March.
Please provide a maximum two-page cover letter that explains your motivation, prior experience related to the internship, and a CV. Please address your application indicating “Lidar intership” to [email protected] and [email protected]
