One internship position focusing on the ecological consequences of climate change on freshwater phytoplankton is available at the RECOVER laboratory and the IMBE laboratory in Aix-En-Provence (France). The student will work under the supervision of Simon BAZIN, Arnaud SENTIS, and Stéphanie FAYOLLE.
Global warming leads to the body size reduction of many animal species from bacteria to fishes. However, little is known about the consequences of fish body size reduction and warming for the diversity and dynamics of freshwater phytoplankton. The successful candidate will analyze phytoplankton samples from a mesocosm experiment that was conducted in 2021 during which fish body size and temperature were manipulated. The internship consist in analysing the collected samples to determine the taxonomic diversity, abundance and cell size of phytoplankton taxa. This includes laboratory analyses under the microscope, computing statistical analyses and writing a report.
Key-words: climate change, food webs, zooplankton, fish, mesocosm, ecosystem functions.

Master students in biology, ecology or a related field are welcomed. Previous experience with freshwater phytoplancton, laboratory/mesocosm experiments, use of spreadsheets (e.g. Excel) and statistical analyses (R software) will be appreciated. A car driving license is needed to drive between RECOVER and IMBE laboratories.
