Master Internship:
Mechanisms of heavy metal uptake by coastal mosses and interference of marine aerosols

Academic degree: Master 2 student
Education fields: environmental sciences, chemistry, ecology, plant physiology, atmospheric pollution
Duration : 6 months, starting March 2016
Place : Service du Patrimoine Naturel, Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Jardin des plantes, Paris 5ème
Salary: stipend according to French legal dispositions (ca. 555 €)

Context and issues
Air quality is among the current major concerns of the European Union, notably regarding heavy metals (HM). Since 1996, the MNHN has brought the French contribution to the UNECE program of air quality bio-monitoring by analyzing HM concentrations in mosses, funded by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME).
Previous studies in Europe indicated possible perturbations between HM contents in mosses and marine aerosols. However, this perturbation has never been analyzed further, although it can hamper the interpretation of HM contents in mosses, when the latter live in coastal areas. It is thus mandatory to better understand the effect of marine aerosols on moss contents especially in countries with at least one seafront, such as France.
Description of the internship
The successful candidate will aim to describe the effect of a salty atmosphere on HM content in mosses, in comparison with continental environments, and to precise sorption mechanisms in mosses. He/She will have several missions, for instance (i) analyzing data of atmospheric chemistry, in collaboration with academic partners, (ii) sampling mosses in the field and preparing them in laboratory for further analyses, including (iii) scanning electronic microscopy and chemical composition of the moss samples.
Besides his/her master thesis, the intern should be able to disseminate results by publishing a scientific article.
Required skills
– General informatics skills, data mining and data analysis
– Autonomy and professionalism when in the lab and writing
– Field experience would be highly valuable
– Driving license would be a plus
