A highly-motivated PhD student is sought for a unique opportunity at IRSTEA, Lyon, France, to conduct basic and applied research on metacommunity dynamics in highly dynamic systems, using intermittent rivers as a model (eg. Datry et al. 2016, Oïkos). During 3 years, student project will focus on exploring how metacommunity patterns and underlying structuring processes vary across multiple intermittent river networks in France. While a large dataset consisting in repeated samples (monthly sampling and multiple years) of invertebrate communities on multiple points across 12 catchments will be available, additional fieldwork could be planned if necessary. This project is part of a larger project on intermittent rivers and metacommunities ongoing at Irstea. Student responsibilities will include reviewing the existing literature, analysing and modelling of metacommunity patterns in intermittent river networks using new developments in spatial ecology (eg. asymmetric eigenvector maps, dispersal resistance function). Applicants are expected to have a strong background in ecology and statistical analyses, interest in community and spatial ecology, and aptitudes to work in a team.

Required qualifications:
• M.Sc. in Ecology or related discipline (to be completed by June 2016)
• Strong skills in spatial ecology, statistical analysis and programming, including metapopulation/community modelling and GIS analyses
• Valid driver license
• Aptitude to work in a team.

Applicants should send a CV, a list of three references (along with contact phone and email), and a cover letter summarizing qualifications and research interests to Dr. Tibo Datry ([email protected]).

Start date is October 2016 for a 3 year period. Salary ~ 1600 Euros / month (free taxes). Speaking French is not required but would help during the first months. Application review will begin February, 2016 and continue until May 15, 2016.
