PhD-student position in biology/limnology with focus on modelling of the functioning of inland waters for global biogeochemical cycles at the Dept. of Ecology and Genetics/Limnology, Uppsala University, Sweden

Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication makes Uppsala University one of Sweden?s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 41.000 students, 6,500 employees and a turnover of SEK 5,900 million.

Starting date: April 1, 2016 or as agreed upon

Description of the subject area: Applications are encouraged for a 4-year PhD-student position focusing on modelling the change of the role of inland waters for global biogeochemical cycles. The PhD-project will be closely linked to the EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions – Innovative Training Network C-Cascades (Carbon Cascades from Land to Ocean in the Anthropocene). More information about the project is available at The main goal of the PhD project is to quantify the change in the role of inland waters for global biogeochemical cycles if climate, land-use and atmospheric deposition change. In the PhD work active participation in the network GLEON (Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network, is required. The PhD work focuses on modelling for which existing datasets on carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and greenhouse gases will be used.

Eligibility: To be eligible for a PhD-student position, the applicant must hold a University degree in natural sciences, engineering or similar, with a focus on aquatic biogeochemistry/aquatic ecology/limnology/water and environmental engineering or other relevant subjects. In ranking eligible candidates, special importance will be given to scientific skills in relation to the subject area specified. Special weight will be given to earlier experience in statistics/modelling with knowledge in handling of large datasets. Strong motivation, willingness to cooperate and the capacity to work independently are important qualities. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English. In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.
