SAHFOS requires a post doc as part of its role in the newly funded OSPAR project aimed at addressing gaps in biodiversity indicator development. OSPAR is working to develop and operationalise ecological indicators for European marine policy; the current round of this effort will take place as part of an EU-funded project which seeks to apply an ecosystem approach to regional habitat assessments. A qualified post doc with experience in numerical ecology will be required to investigate integrating regional- and local scale plankton data. Two different but complementary types of plankton data are available to support marine policy indicator development: (1) The Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey (managed by SAHFOS) is a regional dataset that has an 84 year time-series but uses a unique sampling method; and (2) fixed point plankton data which are collected in similar ways but are not regionally representative and instead provide detailed information about local conditions and have shorter time-series. How to integrate these two types of data at the regional scale is a knowledge gap, which must be filled to deliver pelagic indicators and facilitate an ecologically robust assessment of GES. Steps toward data integration have been taken at the UK scale – this will form a foundation for the work here.

This project is a continuation of work in OSPAR which has been ongoing for five years. The Post Doc, supervised by SAHFOS, will work closely with the established OSPAR Pelagic Expert Group, acting as an added resource.

Essential requirements for the post:
– Matlab and/or R programming skills
– Knowledge of the handling of large datasets
– Knowledge of marine ecology
– Preferable to have knowledge of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
– Willing to travel to meetings in Europe
– Self motivated
– Excellent communication skills
– Publication record and a clear desire to commit to publications resulting from this position.
